Winter Camp

Nature Museum Winter Camp 2019 registration is now closed.

Nature doesn’t take a break in the winter, and neither does camp at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum! We love to teach and learn about nature in all weather—even snow! This winter break, the Nature Museum will be hosting its annual Winter Camp, embracing all that Mother Nature has to offer during our coldest months.

Campers ages 4 to 11 can join the Museum for one to four fun-filled days of child-led outdoor play, science activities, live animal encounters, and more! A healthy snack will be provided to campers daily. Join other camp families for complementary coffee at the Museum every morning during drop-off!

“He talked about [winter camp] more than he talks about an average school day! He was a little apprehensive going to a new place and I was thrilled he said he loved it after his first day! I will do this camp for both kids next year! Good job!!”-2017 Camp Parent

Nicole has been a camp director for over 5 years, worked in summer camps and environmental education for 9 years, and graduated from Loyola University of Chicago with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Environmental Science.
  • Rebecca Brokaw, Camp Director and Education Programs Coordinator, has been a member of the Nature Museum’s education department since June 2018 and has supported the education department in many ways since September 2017. She graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Environmental Science and a minor in Food Studies.

Camp Staff:
Each day of Winter Camp is supervised by Camp Co-Directors. Museum education staff, College level Head Counselors, and high school Counselors lead the activities and supervise the campers throughout the day. All Winter Camp curricula are planned by museum education department staff. Camp staff members are always excited to play along, get dirty and guide campers to make discoveries while they explore the world around them. Winter Camp staff members are certified in CPR and First Aid, trained to recognize the signs of a severe allergic reaction, and trained in the administration of EpiPens.

“The staff and program are why we’ve been attending Nature Museum Camp for five years. The staff are incredible. I love this camp.” – 2018 Camp Parent

Camp Ratios:
All camps have a high staff to camper ratio. In our 4 year old camps, we have one staff member for every five campers (1:5). For our 5-6, 7-8, and 9-11 year old camps, we have one staff member for every seven campers (1:7).

Daily Parent Page:
Parents will receive an email after each day of camp with photos, a summary of the day’s accomplishments, and questions to spark meaningful conversation at the dinner table.
